The developmental checklist
is a grouping of skills and behaviors a child is likely to develop
during the ages three to six years. The developmental areas are:
Cognitive, Social-Emotional, Language, and Motor Skills. Items on the
checklist in each area are generally arranged in progressive
developmental sequence. Tasks and skills expected at an early age are at
the beginning, followed by increasingly difficult tasks at the end (age
six). Since children develop at their own rate and individual
differences between children are what make them special, this checklist
should not be considered a test in any way. Physical, emotional and
mental maturation develop in stages, and each child has his/ her own
timetable of development.
No one knows more about the development of your child than you do as
parents. Please look over the items on the checklist keeping your child
in mind. Observe your child in various situations in relation to these
behaviors. Together we should be able to access the strengths and
weaknesses of each child and to pinpoint areas that need special
attention. Remember to keep in mind the age of your child. Above all,
keep in mind that this is not intended to be a scientific measure of
intelligence or ability.
This checklist has been adapted from the Humanics National Child Assessment Form. It is available from the pre-school.
